Monster Monday
I recently started up a group sketchblog, Monster Monday. As the title suggests, the idea is to create artwork of a new monster every Monday.
Monster Monday was inspired by other group sketchblogs such as Illustration Friday and Sugar Frosted Goodness, which I have participated in in the past. As opposed to a weekly generated theme, I wanted to work on something that I naturally loved to draw, and also have an ongoing theme. I know I get caught up in the day-to-day work and having to work on a new weekly theme while challenging, also resulted in my not participating on those sites.
I wanted to create something that had a regular theme of something that I already liked to draw. Monsters. Monsters by their nature inspire creativity since they don’t exist. You can make whatever you want. For me, it was about making the weekly project fun and as pressure-free as possible.
Monster Monday: Cartoon “Igor”-style Character Sketch
Another cartoon drawing for the Monster Monday group sketchblog. Further experiments with painting in Photoshop using the Wacom Intuos3 graphics tablet.
Monster Monday: Cartoon Ogre
Cartoon ogre creature for Monster Monday group sketchblog. I’ll be posting some further info on Monster Monday in a future post, but for now it’s a new blog I started up with a weekly theme of monster art to rally myself and other participating artists to get a personal piece of artwork created at least once a week and share.
Cartoon ‘Teeth Creature’ Sketch Tattoo Art
Months ago a fan emailed me to get the OK to use one of my sketches as a tattoo. I usually give the go-ahead on any not-for-profit use of my personal art (that said, unless I actually do give the OK, it’s not officially OK). In this case since it was a personal sketch I had done I was cool with it.
I have a few tattoos myself (all done by the venerable Eric Starr over at Arkham Tattoo in Akron, Ohio). I can sympathize with someone who finds the right art for a tattoo – I had Eric ink over a bunch of early stuff that I became less than enthralled with – and now have a huge Japanes-style koi fish shoulder piece in addition to my original Mayan God/Ancient Astronaut glyph.
Frankenstein cartoon sketches
Recently sketched up some cartoon Frankenstein drawings for a current project.
Client wanted more forehead on these but I thought they came out pretty cool for what they were. I have to agree they don’t have the classic Frankenstein look to them, but I was kinda going for something different anyways.

Odd Rods style scooter hot rod cartoon art at The Scooter Scoop
Steve over at The Scooter Scoop commissioned me a few months back to create an original Odd Rods inspired cartoon illustration for his blog. He’s posted a kudo-laden entry about the Odd Rods style scooter monster hot rod cartoon art I did for him, and I appreciate it very much. Just wanted to return the favor and give Steve and The Scooter Scoop a little press. The “Mod Rod” cartoon art is available at Café Press as well.
Thanks Steve!
Official Odd Rods trading cards website redesign now live
For the past few months I have been working on a pretty cool project, redesigning the official website for the relaunch of the classic Odd Rods™ trading card series of crazy, funny cartoon hot rod monsters & creatures – big eyes bugging out, goofy smiles with teeth bared & tongues wagging. The proud new owners of the Odd Rods™ trademarks and copyrights got in touch with the original cartoonist/illustrator/artist extraordinaire Bob “B.K.” Taylor to bring these awesome cartoon characters back into the popular culture where they belong.
