“Adversity Is My Breakfast” T-Shirt Illustration
This t-shirt illustration was created for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District for a student campaign they were running. The odd color choices were used as they were the branding colors for the campaign.
This illustration was intended for a black t-shirt, with just 4 colors being used for the printing (blue, yellow, orange and white). Continue reading
Concrete Spreader Hot Rod Goon T-Shirt Sketch
Limited palette sketch for a t-shirt illustration project. The client requested a concrete riding trowel with a character riding it like a hot rod. I went with the classic hot rod goon approach to the character and a fun, loose style to the line art.
I went with a limited palette to keep the screen printing costs down (just 2 inks used here, black and white on a red shirt). I’ve had a lot of fun working with these reduced color drawings lately, and I find they help focus and tighten up the art. They also just look super cool with less colors!
This project never went past the sketch stage, the client went MIA on me but I really liked this sketch and had to share it.

“Klean Kong” Cartoon Logo
This cartoon logo featuring a muscular gorilla was created for cleaning service provider “Klean Kong”, and was also my first project from Mexico.
This project actually came about after the client found out that another designer had used my artwork for a logo and passed it off as their own creation. The client, once discovering this, was fortunate in that the artwork in question was available since the original client didn’t pay the balance due and therefore the artwork copyright was still in my possession.
Beyond that, the unscrupulous designer did a very poor job of ripping off my artwork, so the client also hired me to clean up and update the logo as well.
Because the final logo needed to be printed in a limited manner of cleaning supply tools, I developed the character from the original full door version to this limited palette 2-coot version. The client and I both loved how it turned out.
Personally, I preferred the version where I added the mop to the gorilla’s hand, but the client vetoed the decision. She said, “We don’t use mops”. I doubt they use gorillas either, but that didn’t stop her from including one in the logo!

“Token Gaming” Soldier Cartoon Logo
This cartoon logo featuring a soldier in military gear (machine gun and cigar firmly in teeth, of course) was created for a military gamer who wanted a custom logo for his online identity.
The client approached me with simple, candid project details: “I’m a black guy who games online with a bunch of white guys”, and with a nod to the Token cartoon character from South Park, his gamer name was created. And he wanted a cartoon logo to match.
I knew from the start I wanted to include actual tokens in the logo, which with the military theme I thought had a fun “spoils of war” angle, not to mention general gaming use of tokens — checkers, anyone? the play on words was a third layer of meaning in the illustration. Piles of gold tokens with spend machine gun shell casings came to mind. Continue reading
Cartoon Logos 101 For Clients: Podcast Series
I’m excited to share with you a new addition to the Coghill Cartooning blog: a podcast! And to kick off the podcast, I am running a podcast series called “Cartoon Logos 101 For Clients” where I discuss all the topics a new or potential cartoon logo client might have, as well as some technical stuff, best practices tips, and legal info about copyrights and trademarks.
The series and the podcast kick off with Episode 1: “The Secret To Getting The Perfect Cartoon Logo“. You can listen in the browser, but even better you can just subscribe to the Cartoon Logos 101 podcast series on iTunes, or subscribe to the entire podcast on iTunes.
I set up the “Cartoon Logos 101” podcast series as a separate podcast so clients could just subscribe to the topics that pertain directly to them (iTunes • RSS).
